POC Upgrade

Postby Dave Blake » Sun Feb 28, 2010 4:48 pm

The POC has been upgraded with some new features and a new look. Hundreds of man-hours went into the upgrade and more features are planned as time allows.

For general information about the POC view the POC User Manual found near the bottom of the left menu in the POC.

As always, your comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Thank you Dave Vega and Marty Becker for the great job of coding the next generation POC!

Thank you for the feedback. One interesting point is to note that some of you do not appear to load cargo or baggage for your flights. Perhaps you use the passenger weight as the total passenger + luggage. If you can, suggest separating the luggage/cargo weight from the passenger weight. It will be nice to see at the end of the year how much cargo/luggage was moved, as well as how many passengers.

Another idea that has been percolating for a while is to expand our cargo operations outside the Alaska market. It has been suggested to have contract cargo flights from the US to overseas locations, such as the ones contracted by the US Government between places like KBWI and Ramstein Air Base, Germany, or even KSFO to locations in the Pacific. Would anyone be interested? What airplane, B747F, B777, etc.?

This is an interesting possibility. Doing what you said in your post will add some additional variation in what we as pilots can do. As for aircraft...what does FedEx fly for many of their routes? All that I can think of is DC10 and B747.

Looking at Atlas Air, Polar Air Cargo, and similar companies, I see mostly B747-400F. We're talking more than just "mail" or "post" but pallets of all types of cargo. The other types of flights we could do are contracted flights, such as rotator flights for the US Military. I've flown in those several times. The US Air Force contracts with an airline to move passengers to specific locations. For example, Baltimore (KBWI) to Al Udeid Air Base (OTBH), west of Doha, Qatar with a stop somewhere in between, either Ramstein AB, Germany, or Zurich, Switzerland. They certainly would be long flights for those that enjoy them. Similarly, there are flights from Travis AFB, California, to Pacific destinations, such as Japan and Korea. Would anyone be interested in flying these kinds of flights?

I would like to be able to fly these flights also. Right now I am missing getting to fly the long flights on new routes.

Another option is one that I've been considering for a while, and that is to add international destinations from St Louis. For that, I looked at the international destinations served by TWA before they merged with American. Some of the options are: Paris, London, Zurich, Cairo, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Japan, Hong Kong. Just for fun I ran a flight plan for a St Louis to King Khalid International, Saudi Arabia. Using today's NATS, a 12+hour flight on a B747. Do you see yourself flying any of these?

I would like that also. Those are much longer flights from St. Louis than I had envisioned.
